Alexander Zverev Faces Penalty Order and Fine Over Physical Abuse Allegation, Reports Suggest

by Noa Cohen

Tennis News – Former world number two in tennis, Alexander Zverev, is reportedly facing a penalty order and a fine from a German court following allegations of physical abuse by his former girlfriend.

Reportedly, the 26-year-old tennis star was fined 450,000 euros (equivalent to £390,000) in October. Alexander Zverev has publicly denied the accusations and has lodged an objection against the order, signifying that he remains legally presumed innocent until a final judgment is reached.

This case may potentially proceed to a public trial.

Olympic champion Alexander Zverev, who is presently participating in the Paris Masters, is accused of physically mistreating his ex-girlfriend during an altercation that took place in Berlin in May 2020, as cited in AFP and various media reports.

Speaking in Paris on Wednesday, Zverev asserted his intent to contest the imposed penalty. He remarked, “I am challenging it,” and refrained from providing any detailed comments on the case, explaining that the procedure is still ongoing.

In Germany, a penalty order is granted when a judge, after scrutinizing the documented evidence, deems that a verdict can be reached without resorting to a full-scale trial. The accused party retains the option to oppose the penalty order, a decision that is anticipated to result in a public trial.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, legal representatives for Zverev contended that a forensic medical report from a Berlin doctor had deemed the evidence “incomprehensible and contradictory.” Furthermore, the legal firm Schertz Bergmann asserted that the procedure that culminated in the penalty order had involved “significant procedural breaches.”

Schertz Bergmann pledged that Zverev would utilize all available resources to mount his defense.

Prosecutors had sought the penalty order in July, and subsequently, Zverev spoke out publicly about the allegations during a tournament held in Hamburg later that month. He declared, “I categorically deny the accusations from my side. My legal team is addressing this issue. I have nothing more to add.”

Earlier this year, the ATP Tour, which serves as the governing body for men’s tennis, concluded an investigation into Zverev’s conduct following allegations of domestic abuse made by a previous partner. The investigation concluded that there was “insufficient evidence” to warrant disciplinary actions against the German tennis player.

These allegations had been brought forward by Zverev’s former girlfriend, Olya Sharypova, who accused him of violence and emotional mistreatment during their relationship in 2020—a claim that Zverev has denied. The ATP’s verdict specified that it could be “re-evaluated should new evidence emerge.”
